Perfect Fit - 1/1

The final installment in the Fisher Price series. This is a simplistic shape-matching game. The game has the player matching objects with with silhouettes. Sometimes the objects need to be flipped horizontally or vertically (sometimes both!) Very simply, but it functions for a small child. Good work.

I Can Remember - 1/1

I know what you are thinking. This game is trash right? Well you aren’t wrong, by today’s standards this game is primitive, ugly and boring. Remember though, it was developed for 5-year olds. If I was a parent in the early 90s I wouldn’t hate seeing my child play this. It’s a very playable memory game with no mess or clean up. I good effort for toy company.

Firehawk - 1/1

What a sweet game! The controls take a second to get used to but once you got it it feels just like flying a real helicopter … probably. In this game you need to go various cities in your badass helicopter equipped with bombs and machine guns. Your job is to rescue a green dude, maybe in later levels you need to get multiple dudes. When you find the dude the game changes modes from a top-down shooter to a sort of early-era quicktime event. You need to press A or B at correct times to shoot down enemies before they take you down. I need to give it props for pioneering quicktime events right? Little details like the typewriter keys moving when the letter is typed really sell this game. Resounding 1/1 check this one out.

  • Final Fnatasy - 1/1

I never played Final Fantasy on NES when I was a kid. I didn’t get on the bandwagon until FF7 on playstation. My most in depth experience with Final Fantasy was actually when I played the iOS HD remake. I must admit the game is pretty bland in gameplay, although the story is actually pretty decent compared to most JRPGs. Despite that, I have to pay the game the respect it deserves as the FIRST Final Fantasy. It was a pioneer in the genre and probably the game that gave westerners the first taste of a JRPG.

  • Fester’s Quest - 1/1

Even though this game was eviscerated by the AVGN I didn’t find anything to offensive about it. Sure the way the upgraded gun shoots in a sign-wave making it impossible to hit anything in a runnel is annoying. You know what else is annoying? Getting hit by birds in Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania and falling into a pit, but those games are still good. They even got the actual theme song which is more than I can say for most licensed garbage. We didn’t play too much but the inventory looks pretty deep and I am curious what all the items are used for. Wouldn’t mind playing more.

  • Dragon Spirit - 1/1

What a great SHMUP! You play as a man who turns into a dragon and then goes berserk in this fantasy universe. There are two modes of fire, air to air and air to ground which is not super unique, but pretty refreshing. The power ups are fun and I assume it has cool bosses although we never reached any on our five minutes.

  • Dragon Warrior Series - 0/1

Look, I know Dragon Warrior is a beloved series and it set the stage for hundreds of JRPGs to come. I never played it, I have no nostalgia, compared to games today I consider this pretty unplayable. The graphics are lame, the gameplay is rudimentary at best and I don’t know what the story is. If you want to get a great RPG experience you really should turn to the SNES.

  • Dragons Lair - 0/1

Man! I watched the Angry Nerd play this and it really did look like shit but I almost didn’t believe it. Well he wasn’t kidding, this game controls like shit. Dirk plays like a bathtub full of tar.

  • Dropzone - 1/1

I thought “Defender!” as soon as I played it. I was never a big fan of defender for some reason, but I can tell that technically it is a great game. There seems to be more of a point than just shooting your way around like Space Invaders or Galaga. At least you need to save people from aliens. Decent game, even Emily enjoyed it.

  • Duck Hunt - 1/1

The one thing emulation can’t do… Emulate light gun games. I remember playing the HELL out of Duck Hunt when I was a kid and now I feel like i’ll never be able to play it again.

  • Duck Maze - 1/1

Your hero duck needs to safety roll his egg down some kind of factory. The egg can only withstand a drop from a certain height without breaking unless it lands on something soft. Enemies will also break your egg if they touch it. I did not find this game very fun, but as a puzzle game, it is passable.

  • Dirty Harry - 0/1

It actually seems fun. Harry walking around the city shooting dudes and investigating. Unfortunately, the game cannot overcome how terrible the controls are. I feel like I spent more time fighting the game itself than I did the enemies.

  • Dizzy, the Adventures of - 1/1

This seems to either be a point and click adventure game, or an action adventure game. We didn’t get far enough in to truly find out. The animation looks very good for Nintendo.

  • Donkey Kong - 1/1

Probably the best classic arcade game ever made. The NES port is one of the best, if not THE BEST. Everything about it feels awesome. Classics never die.

  • Donkey Kong III - 1/1

Unexpected game. You aren’t DK, you aren’t DK Jr, and you aren’t even Mario… Just some dork with a gas can trying to literally blow smoke up DK’s ass. Bugs are trying to kill you. As an arcade game the concept is totally fine but what the hell?
    dk-III-gameplay

  • Donkey Kong Jr - 1/1

A bit of a role reversal here! You now take control of DK’s son to save DK from the evil grip of Mario the terrible! The sad look on DK Jr’s face says it all. Violence begets violence like the fairy tails always say…

  • Donkey Kong Math - 1/1

Obviously now this is dated and probably boring. But at the time, in a world of Oregon Trail and Number Munchers, this game would have been an absolute blast! The competitive nature might even disguise the fact that actual learning is going on. I would have loved to own this game when I was a kid. I can even see myself secretly practicing in private to make sure I can hold my own when competition arrives. Parents can even play it with kids and help them learn.

  • Contra - 1/1

Contra is the Nintendo classic. This is probably the single best co-op shooter ever made before the Xbox era. It just got so much right! The control is dead on, the music is awesome, the two-player is mostly excellent (except when your partner rushes the screen and you get raped from behind). Easy win.

  • Contra Force - 0/1

This game is so strange. It says Contra on the box but it feels nothing like Contra. One question: What went wrong? It’s jerky, the flicker is terrible, the graphics look nothing like Contra. Just not very good overall.

  • Cool World - 0/1

What is this game? I’ve seen the movie and skateboarding is NOT a very large part of it. Why am I on Sweet Street being attacked by endless cops and rabbits throwing ice cream cones? None of the answers to those questions matter, because the game sucks.

  • Corvette ZR-1 - 1/1

It’s two-player so that is a huge plus. You need to manually change gears which adds considerable gameplay to a generally simplistic concept. There is also some kind of fuel mechanic which I didn’t figure out. I assume there is a way to conserve fuel and actually finish a race? If that is the case, this game is fun.

  • Cowboy Kid - 1/1

The graphics are pretty goofy, but it looks like a solid two-player adventure game. You go around stabbing people in the face with a knife, taking their money and using it to probably buy power ups. What more can you ask for from a NES game? How about great box art? This game delivers.
