This is the floating spiral invented by Eric Glennie. Being a Glennie knot, it has a specific opening set of moves which you will remember from the Glennie Double. It is pretty easy to tie once you get the hang of it and gives your ties a very tasteful round, tubular look. No dimples here! This knot is perfect with all kinds of ties, but something magical can happen with stripes. Personally I am a huge fan, it looks unique and fresh while still being crisp and intentional. I hope you enjoy it as well, tell me what you think.

Knot Dossier

  • Difficulty: Med

This tie feels very different that what you are probably used to. It takes a little more practice than normal to get everything right. In the end it’s just a bunch of round-and-rounds though so stick with it.

  • Fabric Consumption: High

Usually you will not have enough left to get to the loop, but you will have such a short stub left it might hide on it’s own. Regardless, the knot should come out fine.

  • Symmetry: High

This unique-looking knot keeps the vertical section of the tie nicely presented. A horizontal band divides the “knot” and the blade very nicely. It is a clean knot.

  • Style: Any

Perfect for any kind of tie. The shadows play beautifully on solid ties. Patterns and stripes create a cool vertical intersection. Feel free to try this with anything.

  • Venue: Any

Although there is some risk of people thinking you tied a knot incorrectly, those people will mostly have to be very stupid. Hopefully those stupid people aren’t very important to you or your job. Otherwise it should work smashingly.

  • Tips

    • Great when worn casually and loose
    • Attention grabber
    • Stripes can achieve a cool zig zag effect

This has become one of my favorite knots for a contrast tie. Sometimes the stripes shift a little throughout the day and the zig-zag gets off line and it can look like it was tied by accident. But with a contrast tie the knot looks absolutely intentional and well planned out. I’ve got a green tie with a purple tail (think Joker green and purple) and this knot gets the most compliments for the tie. Thanks for the videos, keep them coming.

I have a tie where the middle section is a different color, so when I tie a Four in Hand, a Prat, or windsor variations the knot is a different color than the rest (perhaps contrast tie is the wrong term for this type of tie), it is a Scott Allen Tie. If I tie any little end knots, the knot is the same color as the tie. With the Floating Spiral knot, the middle section (which is purple) crosses over the green tie and looks awesome
